Health and Wellness in the workplace

Most people spend a good chunk of time “at work” throughout their lives, and much of that time is spent sitting at desks, staring at computer screens for hours at a time. Then, when it’s time for a break, people often head to the snack machine in the break room to get a candy bar, or they head outside to smoke a cigarette. This is not a good thing.

Why are more and more Americans obese? It’s because we don’t eat the right foods our bodies need to stay healthy, and we don’t exercise nearly enough to combat the negative effects of sitting in one position all day long, for weeks and months at a time.

There is hope, however. Health and wellness seems to be on more employers’ minds lately, because a healthy workforce is better than an overweight, “calling in sick” one.

If the company you work for believes in health and wellness, they’ll provide opportunities for you to eat well and exercise both on and off company time. A workout room or small gym is a real bonus to many employees who can pump up their muscles or run on the treadmill before or after work. Lunch breaks spent outdoors in the fresh air with a short walk around a pond or other nature-centered area helps de-stress employees so they can feel refreshed to come back indoors and face the rest of the work day.

When companies make corporate health classes and workshops a fun option for employees, it helps boost morale while encouraging health and wellness among the staff. Many organizations model their programs on TV’s “The Biggest Loser,” where employees spur one another on to lose weight by eating better and exercising more. People “weigh-in” on a weekly or monthly basis, and rewards in the form of work perks—like getting a day off with pay—or gift certificates go a long way to keep people motivated to choose healthier food options and move their body more, seeing exercise as part of a friendly competition rather than a solo chore.

By encouraging health and wellness, companies spend less on healthcare, improve morale, and retain employees who enjoy being part of an organization where it’s about total body wellness, not just profits. Having a health and wellness focus is, in the end, profitable in numerable ways for both businesses and employees.

Effects of Stress in the Workplace

Work related stress affects most of the general public and although some stress is normal, at work, it can cause many problems.

So why are employees experiencing stress in the workplace?

  • When workers are given tasks and assignments to complete that are beyond limitations, knowledge, and job training.
  • From pressure to complete a workload in an unrealistic amount of time.
  • If they are not supported by team members, managers or other supervisors.
  • Poor work organization and limited resources.
  • When an employee feels undervalued or not rewarded for a job well done.
  • Let’s not forget the lack of ability to move about an office to stretch, get something to eat/drink or clear one’s mind.

A few of the negative effects that stress can cause are low concentration, low productivity, heightened risk of injury, physical illness, limited communication skills and low performance.

The World Health Organization stated that “There is often confusion between pressure or challenge and stress and sometimes it is used to excuse bad management practice.” When a company fails to recognize when its employees are feeling stressed, it can cost a company great amounts of money.

What a management team should be striving for is uniformity. A healthy work environment is termed as “one where the pressures on employees are appropriate in relation to their abilities and resources, to the amount of control they have over their work, and to the support they receive from people who matter to them.”

A stress-free solution for management teams to reduce stress is my corporate program. The program consists of an assessment of environmental stress factors, stress management programs are implemented and education is provided within the workplace. Having a professional workplace workshop will teach management how to recognize worker-related stress and perform practices that work. The overall work atmosphere and employee productivity will change for the better.

Living A Balanced Life

As my clients frequently hear me speaking about the importance of living a balanced lifestyle, I too have decided to make changes that will afford me a sense of balance and well-being in my own life.  I have presently restructured my business in order to recapture what is important to me.  So, after 2 ½ wonderful years in my West Hartford Center studio, I have decided to take a new office space that allows me the time to continue serving my clients, cultivating my writing and facilitating workshops and events both private and corporate.

Heal Your Heart

I couldn’t let heart healthy month go by without bringing to light some of the health issues associated with the heart and how you can prevent heart problems. February is heart healthy month; a time of physical and emotional healing.  Your heart is one of the most vital organs in the body.  It is paramount to the health and well being of the entire body that we maintain proper care of our heart.  We are all aware of the important role the heart plays. Our physical life would not be able to sustain itself without a functional heart.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. In 2010, an estimated 785,000 Americans had a new coronary attack, and about 470,000 had a recurrent attack. About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and about one every minute will die from one.
